(UPDATED, as of May 4, 2015) Officially over 7,000 have been killed, 15,000 have been injured, from a massive 7.8-magnitude earthquake which hit Nepal on Saturday, April 25th, 2015.
Many in the country have no choice but to seek shelter outside their homes. Most buildings are either destroyed or unsafe to enter. Vast tent cities have sprung up in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, for those displaced or afraid to return to their homes as strong aftershocks continue.
NECO Home orphanage is badly damaged and uninhabitable, but fortunately all our children as well as our dedicated staff are alive. Reconstruction assessments are currently under way by engineers and masons to determine repairs and costs.
Ironically, the most recent project that NECO had undertaken was to build a dairy farm that could hold up to 12 cows. Now that dairy farm, with no heat or electricity, is where everyone connected to the NECO is living at the moment.
NECO Co-Founder, Bishow Bhatta will be leaving for Nepal in the next week and would like to take the following items with him in order to assist with the relief efforts:
- Small Tents
- First aid kits, including Band Aids
- Inflatable mattress (light ones, nothing heavy)
- Latern lights
- Bright hunting like jackets (rescue jackets) for volunteers
Also, Bishow has requested that they are looking for volunteers, in particular doctors, nurses, or social workers, and whoever wants to go and join in assisting the relief efforts in Kathmandu.
Your thoughts, prayers and donations would be greatly appreciated. As always, you can donate to NECO here on our website. Every cent that is contributed will be used towards the rebuilding of the home and the continued protection and health of our children and staff.
No donation is too small. Anything you can give is greatly appreciated!
